Amarinder's Discourtesy: Outrageous
(press-note)
Chief-Minister Amarinder Singh has raised an unsavoury controversy, both in India and abroad, by refusing to receive the Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan. With this act Captain has hurt the sentiments of all those, who look upon Sajjan and his Sikh colleagues in Canada as a source of pride and honour for all Punjabis. It is heartening to see five Sikh ministers acquiring a pride of place in the Canadian government by proving their worth. It is noteworthy that Indian polity has failed to establish its credentials as a dispenser of justice and fair play. It has not given due recognition to the Sikh community in proportion to their sacrifices during the country's struggle for freedom. It is a matter of regret that the Sikhs were made to struggle and sacrifice for their long pending genuine and constitutional socio-political issues and were dubbed as ant-national.
Oblivious of all this, Captain Amarinder Singh is trying to evade the real issues, as it is politically expedient for him to appease the Hindu vote bank, which has been instrumental to help him come at the helm of affairs in the state. It is note-worthy that Canada has earned the unique distinction as a protector of human rights and freedom of speech. The Canadian polity has emerged as a very liberal model of multi-culturalism, which provides due respect to the political aspirations of one and all. Quebec provides a living example, where the right to referendum was granted to people. Sajjan and his team mates have been groomed in this liberal tradition. Feudal mind set of Amarinder Singh is unable to appreciate this outlook.
Captain has had a history of opportunism which can be traced back to his ancestors. It is a recorded fact of history that the founder of Patiala state Baba Ala Singh had received a robe of honour from Ahmed Shah Abdali while he was on a merciless loot and killing spree in Punjab. Patiala state was known for its pro-British stance whether it be Anglo-Sikh relations, Second Anglo-Sikh war or the case of Ghadrites and other freedom fighters.
