Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday urged the Centre to formally acknowledge \u201cthe shameful massacre of Sikhs in 1984 as genocide\u201d. SAD is an ally in the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are grateful to the authorities and people of Ontario for this very touching gesture of compassion and solidarity. They have called this shameful chapter by its right name and they deserve our thanks. Every Indian, except those guilty of this tragedy, regards it as genocide,\u201d Sukhbir said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no doubt about this in anyone\u2019s mind that the Congress planned and executed genocide of Sikhs in 1984. Congress leaders holding top positions in the government of India actively facilitated, directed and even participated in this gruesome genocide,\u201d he alleged.<\/p>\n
Sukhbir said the Sikhs and all \u201cright thinking\u201d people in the country and across the world are \u201cgrateful\u201d to the BJP members who had \u201ccourageously come out in the streets during this genocide\u201d to stand by and save their Sikh brethren.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe now request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apply balm to the deep wounds of the Sikh community by personally intervening to ensure that the guilty of this genocide are not allowed to go scot-free any longer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
GUJRAL ASKS MEA TO WITHDRAW STATEMENT<\/b><\/p>\n
New Delhi: Meanwhile, Akali Dal member in the Rajya Sabha Naresh Gujral asked the external affairs ministry (MEA) to withdraw its statement rejecting a motion adopted by the legislative assembly of Ontario in Canada terming the 1984 anti-Sikh riots \u201cgenocide\u201d.<\/p>\n
The issue during the zero hour in the Rajya Sabha, he said: \u201cThere was a state-condoned massacre of innocent Sikhs that went on for three horrible days and nights. The government and police refused to intervene and the minority community was targeted only because of their identity, their beard, their turban and their names,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Gujral said the November 1984 incidents were not a riot as \u201csuccessive Congress governments have tried to make us believe\u201d. In fact, many Hindus and Muslims had risked their lives to save their Sikh friends.<\/p>\n

Congress member Anand Sharma, however, objected to the Akali MP\u2019s demand. Raising a point of order, Sharma said: \u201cThis is Parliament of India. Can you allow a statement that there was a state-sponsored genocide on record?\u201d<\/p>\n
To this, deputy chairman PJ Kurien said he would go into the records and \u201cexpunge what is to be expunged\u201d.<\/p>\n
Chandumajra slams center on behalf of SAD <\/b>
\nThe Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Sunday hit out at the Centre for its reaction over a motion in a Canadian legislative assembly on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, saying its stand on the issue has \u201creopened the wounds\u201d of the Sikhs.<\/p>\n
Akali MP from Anandpur Sahib and party general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra said he would raise the issue in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Also, a delegation of SAD MPs would also register their protest with external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, he added.<\/p>\n
The legislative assembly of Ontario had recently passed a motion describing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as \u201cgenocide\u201d in India. The BJP-led NDA government, of which SAD is also an ally, strongly rejected the move, terming it as \u201cmisguided\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Narendra Modi government has reopened the wounds of the Sikhs by this provocative stand,\u201d Chandumajra said in a statement here.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than calling upon the Canadian government to withdraw this resolution, Parliament should pass a similar resolution to assuage the feelings of the Sikh community,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Chandumajra said that more than 3,000 innocent Sikh men, women and children were killed in a \u201cdesigned attack\u201d on the community members in Delhi alone from November 1 to November 3, 1984, and the victims are still waiting for justice.<\/p>\n
